Hailing from Adelaide, Australia, and now based in Berlin, Juliet Fox has crafted a reputation for her upfront techno sound on labels such as Drumcode, Filth On Acid and Kraftek, as well as her own Tregambe label, which she founded in 2020.
Earlier this month, she had the pleasure of opening the main stage at Awakenings Spring Festival, getting the festival off to a stomping start with her sun-drenched lunchtime set, which was preceded by a stellar performance at Secret Society in Dublin the night before.
As she came off stage, 909 originals caught up with her for a quick chat.
Hi Juliet, thanks for talking to us and congrats on the set. What did it feel like to open the main stage at the festival – a bit daunting?
Definitely. I came here once about seven years ago, which was my first-ever visit. It was an incredibly memorable and enjoyable experience. So I had that previous experience in mind.
But now, being able to come back for my second time was absolutely amazing. I actually was trying to hold back from crying and laughing too much along the way.
How do you prepare for a set like this? When the punters are coming through the gates, they’re looking for that energy right from the off. But at the same time, you probably don’t want to go too full-on – a few bangers, but not an all-out techno assault?
Not too much, exactly. I separated my music ahead of this set – a few progressive, uplifting tracks and then a few driving tracks.
I would imagine you’re using this set as a showcase for your Tregambe record label as well. How’s the label going?
Yeah, really good. I played a few tracks that are going to come out on there later in the year.
When I talk to producers about playing forthcoming tracks, they always say that when they play them out, they gauge the reaction and then might go back and change them a bit. Is that the case with you?
I only played a couple of my tracks this time, because to be honest, I feel like I’ve overdone them! I wanted something fresh for myself. So I had two new tracks that I tested out, and I definitely have to get back and tweak them. [Laughs] But they had a good reaction.
You’re from Adelaide, and there’s a real groundswell of up and coming Australian electronic artists at the moment...
Yeah, it’s pretty exciting. I think there might be another Australian that is playing at Awakenings, but I’m not too sure. I guess I’m trying to do Australia proud.
Last question, and one we ask a lot of people we interview. What is the state of techno in 2023. Is it in a good place?
I think it’s great. I love the the cross genre of hard techno with trance and progressive, because that’s what I grew up on – progressive house and trance. So for me, it’s perfect if I can have those strings in there. [Laughs] But really, I’m a lover of all techno.
So you got your inspiration from progressive house tracks from back in the day?
Yeah. That’s where I get the vocal ideas when I write tracks. Not necessarily copying them, but that’s where I’m getting the catchy hooks.
