Lightning strikes twice: Zedd, Maren Morris reconvene for ‘Make You Say’ with BEAUZ

Written by on August 19, 2022

In 2018, Zedd and Maren Morris met in “The Middle.” Now, they’re reconvening on a breezy dance-pop hybrid years in the making according to Zedd, who says he and production duo BEAUZ “started working on this record about three or four years ago,” going “back and forth slowly, refining the production over the years.”

Stylistically, Zedd and Morris’ answer to their multi-Platinum-certified collaboration again finds both artists playing to their strengths. Zedd and BEAUZ’s production on the dance-pop crossover is crisp. Morris’ vocal maneuvering has presence, serving as a reminder of the country songstress’ dexterity in the pop and dance-pop domains. From its belt-along hook to its buoyant sound, “Make You Say” is unequivocally Zedd’s next radio favorite, further adding to his status as one of the past decade’s driving forces of the dance-pop hybrid.

Of note, the anthemic, vocal-driven number marks Zedd’s first time returning to the same vocalist. And although a clip of an early vocal part written by Charlie Puth and Jacob Kasher Hindlin (sung only by Puth, who is credited as a writer) circulated in 2021, “Make You Say” fittingly finds its voice in Maren Morris, who was the sole vocalist to cut the record, Zedd told Rolling Stone. The singular-vocalist nature of “Make You Say” stands in stark contrast to that of “The Middle,” which saw many audition for its topline.

“Make You Say” is “the kickoff of a new chapter for me,” says Zedd, adding that he “can’t wait for the world to hear it.” Do just that below.
