A new documentary film exploring the impact of COVID-19 on clubbing culture and the global electronic music scene has just been released by Pioneer DJ.
Titled ‘Distant Dancefloors: Covid-19 And The Electronic Music Industry‘, the 30-minute doc goes back to when the virus first took hold and covers the first warnings, global realisation and the resulting lockdown.
As venues, festivals and live shows across the world were forced to cancel their events overnight, and thousands of livelihoods put in jeopardy, Distant Dancefloors also investigates how artists and music industry workers in general have adapted to respond to the ongoing pandemic, sharing their reflections of the last six months and offering their views on the future of the industry. This features commentary from international DJs such as Blond:ish, Eats Everything, Honey Dijon, Luciano and Rebuke as well as key cultural figures including Kevin Watson, author of the International Music Summit Business Report and Paul Reed, general manager of the Association of Festivals, talent managers and fans.
Blond:ish comments: “It is unfortunate the situation that we are in but we adapt, that’s what we do, that’s our human nature. The question is, how are we adapting as a music industry? And, how are we going to come back and solidify a new sustainable foundation as an industry and be innovative for everyone else, to be an example?”
Ultimately, Distant Dancefloors dives into the rise of streaming gigs, socially distant parties and the instability of touring, thus questioning the future of clubs, the communities they create, and how they will be changed in a post-Coronavirus world.
