Daft Punk to Appear In Pharrell’s LEGO Animation Biopic, “Piece by Piece”

Written by on August 30, 2024

Daft Punk‘s LEGO doppelgängers are set to make a cameo in Piece by PiecePharrell Williams‘ upcoming biopic.

Told through the lens of LEGO animation, the film, Piece by Piece, chronicles the growth of Williams’ music career and his path to becoming a cultural icon. Focus Features, the movie’s distributor, has now released its official poster and uncovered the first look of Daft Punk in LEGO form.

It’s a match made in rectangular heaven, blending the French electronic music pioneers’ sleek futurism with the nostalgic charm of childhood building blocks. As Williams’ career snaps into focus one brick at a time, the inclusion of his helmeted “Get Lucky” collaborators promises to add an extra layer of whimsy to this already unconventional biopic.

Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo feature in a star-studded cast of bricked-up music icons, appearing alongside Gwen Stefani, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Busta Rhymes. Whether or not Daft Punk perform in Piece by Piece remains to be seen, but it’s a safe bet after comments made by the film’s director, Morgan Neville.

There are so many great characters, everybody from Snoop to Daft Punk, all these different people are amazing in Lego,” Neville recently told Variety. “But recreating recording studios and boom boxes, and turntables and all this stuff that hadn’t really been done, people are going to … I want a set of all that stuff! It was a great, creative challenge.”

Outside of Hollywood, Daft Punk have been a popular choice for the humble LEGO creator. An ambitious father-son duo in 2020 developed an intricate recreation of the robots’ iconic “Alive 2007” pyramid stage, and in 2022, an artist constructed lifelike LEGO versions of Bangalter and de Homen-Christo’s iconic helmets. A year later, an award-winning creator used the multicolored bricks to recreate a 3D cover of Daft Punk’s final album, Random Access Memories.

Piece by Piece is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 11th, 2024. Check out the trailer below.
