DJ Disciple tracks the rise of house music in New York in new book

Written by on June 27, 2023

Brooklyn-based DJ Disciple, who has performed at the likes of Studio 54, Ministry of Sound, the Southport Weekender, Back To Basics, and Ms Moneypenny’s over a four-decade career, has published a new book The Beat, the Scene, the Sound: A DJ’s Journey through the Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of House Music in New York City.

The book, written alongside journalist Henry Kronk, offers a behind-the-scenes account of how DJs, promoters, fans, and others from diverse communities transformed house music from a DIY project into an international sensation, set against the tumult of 1980s and 90s New York City.

For DJ Disciple himself, this meant navigating violent streets during the crack-cocaine epidemic, the impact of HIV/AIDS and homophobia on the scene, and the pushback from those in power – particularly the mayor’s office – against the nightclub industry.

Commenting on the book, DJ and producer Roger Sanchez commented, “DJ Disciple has consistently championed our music, and I’m happy that he is sharing his story.”

Elsewhere, as Nick Jones, Wild Pitch club promoter, DJ and producer, put it, “DJ Disciple and Henry Kronk perfectly capture the golden era of house music. DJ Disciple’s story is a testament to hard work, dedication, and talent. He carved his way through the crazy music business and built a successful career. Enjoy the ride as I did—this is a must-have book.”

The Beat, the Scene, the Sound: A DJ’s Journey through the Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of House Music in New York City is being published in June 2023 by Rowman & Littlefield. The 230-page book is priced at $32, and more information can be found here.
