DJ Paulette’s long-awaited autobiography set to land later this month

Written by on January 9, 2024

With more than three decades in electronic music behind her, DJ Paulette, aka Paulette Constable, is a bona fide legend as far as the 909originals team is concerned, and her forthcoming autobiography, Welcome To The Club – The Life and Lessons of a Black Woman DJ, is set to be something special.

Described as a ‘positive, life affirming and highly entertaining story of creativity, passion, resilience and sheer determination to succeed within the male dominated world’, the self-penned autobiography is available from 23 January, published by Manchester University Press.

Over her 30-year career, Paulette has worked for various clubs and brands such as Glitterbox and Ministry of Sound, as well as regularly appearing at the likes of Glastonbury and Homobloc, as well as The Warehouse Project’s recent Hacienda night, where she contributed arguably the set of the night.

Additionally, she has served as a presenter on BBC 6 Music, Reform Radio, and Gilles Peterson’s WorldWide FM. Currently, she occasionally substitutes for shows on 6 Music hosted by Afrodeutsche, Amy Lame, and Craig Charles, and is part of the Out & Proud show on the same station.

Born and raised in Manchester and still residing there, she received the DJ Mag Top 100 Lifetime Achievement Award in November 2022 and the Keychange (PRS) Inspiration Award at Sound City in April 2023.

As she told 909originals a couple of years back (to when your appetite for the forthcoming book, the whole interview can be found here), “Even though getting into DJing was a bit of an accident, it was an accident I instinctively grew into. It brought out something in me that was just there all along, I guess.”

You can pre-order Welcome To The Club – The Life and Lessons of a Black Woman DJ here.
