#MyRecordBag – Schak names his top Makina floorfillers
Written by rhythm86 on January 3, 2024
One of the leading custodians of the ‘Makina’ subgenre – which blends happy hardcore, scouse house, donk, and rapid-fire MCing – Newcastle-based Schak had a sold 2023, with a Mixmag Lab set, a performance during half time at a Newcastle United match, and a series of festival dates and Ibiza appearances.
His most recent release is Mama Used To Say, which was released on Patrick Topping’s Trick label at the start of December. You can download/stream that here.
For 909originals’ latest #MyRecordBag feature – and to get 2024 off to a bouncing start – we asked Schak to name the top ten tracks that have inspired his Makina sound. Over to you, Schak!
Le Marrant – Voulez Vous Un Rendez Vous (Happy Mix)
“What I love about this track is it’s different from other Makina tunes the style of the melody and the French vocals makes it very unique.”
Virthu-All – Rainbow
“This was the first Makina tune I ever heard back in 2003 and I’ve been in love with it ever since.”
Network – Prohibit Land
“I remember when my best friend at the time got this on vinyl and we used to MC to this on repeat – summer 2006 was one of the best summers I had.”
Network – Sumer Dreams Of Love (Konik & Maxter Remix)
“This tune needs no introduction!”
Virthu-All – Rainbow II
“One of my favourite Makina tunes because it has so much energy and zeal!”
Pastis & Buenri – Full Effect
“I’ve picked this because it reminds me so much of the New Monkey days! All the tapes I listened to always had this tune played.”
Game Over, Pastis, Buenri, Ruboy – Start (Short Edit)
“A great tune with high, euphoric energy.”
Game Over – Vibrations
“I love how this one starts out – the drop is super heavy.”
Analogic – Back To Roots
“One of my all time favourites – the melody is so good ! I love it so much. I’ve tried to rework it a few times, but as the saying goes ‘if it’s not broke don’t fix it’.
Two Good – Evolution
“This one was always a good one to MC to! I really love the samples used in it as well.”
Thanks Schak for the playlist. Keep up to date with all his latest releases and dates here.
