#MyRecordBag – Tosca’s Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber reveal their favourite remixes
Written by rhythm86 on November 13, 2023
Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber are long-established names in electronica – both for their individual work as well as their output as Tosca, the experimental, trip hop/dub outfit they formed in the late 90s.
Last year saw the release of Tosca‘s ninth studio album, Osam, and in keeping with tradition – some ten remix albums have been made from the duo’s long players to date – they have just released a new album of reworkings of their latest masterwork.
MIRAGE – The Osam Remixes was released in late October on !K7 Records, and sees the pair collaborate with artists such as Brendon Moeller, Balalin Dobozi, D’al Senio, Oberst + Buchner, Sam IRL, Domenico Ferrari and Cay Talan on an array of remixes and reinterpretations. You can download/stream that here.
For our #MyRecordBag feature, and in keeping with their latest project, we asked Dorfmeister and Huber to name their favourite remixes of all time – expect both tried and tested classics and a few surprises. Over to you, lads!
Basic Channel – Lyot Remix (Basic Channel)
“This remix has been following me since its release in 1993 – the abstract ambient electronic feel makes it outstanding!”
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – Mustt Mustt (Massive Attack Remix) (Real World/Virgin)
“Excellent Massive 1990 remix of the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – reduced beats with the right dub touches – still top notch.”
Jungle – The Heat (Joy Orbison Remix) (XL Recordings)
“Still sounding fresh- another great rework by the incredible Joy Orbison.”
La Funk Mob – Motor Bass Get Phunked Up (Richie Hawtin Electro Funk Remix) (MoWax)
“What a classic remix- bringing the original to a completely different level.”
Keiichi Suzuki – Satellite Serenade (The ORB Trans Asian Remix) (Wau! Mr.Modo Recordings)
“Lovely how the Orb were blending ambient and electronics in such a good way.”
Falco – Ganz Wien (Reconsidered by Alex Barck) (White Label)
“By far the best remix of this Viennese classic – done by Jazzanova’s Alex Barck in a very effective way.”
Mos Def – Umi Says (Zero 7 Remix) (Promo 12“)
“Unreleased promo version by the superb Zero 7 – remains one of the best and musical remixes ever done.”
Black Strobe – Boogie In Zero Gravity (Hot Toddy Remix) (Blackstrobe Records)
“A secret weapon on the dancefloor for years..!”
Aswad – Warrior Re-Charge (The Revolution Mix by Ultimatum) (Island)
“At the time, probably the best remix the Stereo MCs did – sounding excellent.”
Sueno Latino – Sueno Latino (Dub Version by Cutmaster G) (DFC)
“Out of the vast remixes that were released this is the one that did it best for me – still loving it!”
