Qrion, aka Japanese producer Momiji Tsukada, has released her second long-player, We Are Always Under The Same Sky, on Anjunadeep.
The ten-track album features a number of collaborations, including with British-Kongese singer-songwriter Josie Man on the single Wayside. Other collaborators include South Korean DJ, producer and vocalist DIDI HAN, and American-Chinese animator and designer Zee Yorke, who designed the artwork accompanying the album (pictrued).
Commenting on the new album, the Austin, Texas-based artist said, “This album is a deeply personal reflection of my journey through some of the most challenging times in my life, including loneliness, addiction, and the struggle to rebuild myself during the pandemic.
“It represents my emotional and mental transformation, from hitting rock bottom to finding self-love and forgiveness. The process of collaborating with amazing vocalists and working with Zee to bring my memories to life through visuals was incredibly meaningful.
“Every track and piece of artwork holds a personal story, and I hope these songs not only resonate with you but also offer a sense of connection.”
Qrion’s 2021 debut album I Hope It Lasts Forever was hailed by Forbes as a ‘stunning’ and ‘a masterful production’, and while that album was a reflection of the past, for her current project, it’s about being in the moment.
“I’ve come to realise that whenever I’m immersed in music, whether DJing or producing, the feeling of loneliness seems to fade away,” she said. “Moving to America, changing houses across states, and trying to find my place has taught me that it’s not so much about where I am, but rather about filling myself with love and staying open to the love others share with me”.
Momiji Tsukada grew up in Sapporo, where her pianist father introduced her to music. His freeform jazz and her love for Japanese rock and post-hardcore inspired her. During the 2011 EDM boom, artists like Skrillex and Porter Robinson motivated her to create music, at the age of 16. By 18, she was uploading tracks to SoundCloud and released an EP with SenSe, a Sapporo label.
Her father’s passing at that time deeply affected her, but it also led her to pursue music fully – at 19, after playing an online set, she received an invitation to perform in San Francisco, which led to her moving to the US.
“It’s really therapeutic for me, playing shows and being vulnerable together with the audience,” she commented. “I really enjoy how we can connect through music.”
