Spotify Is Increasing Its Prices so Users Are Canceling

Written by on July 27, 2023

One of, if not the, most popular music streaming service in the world, Spotify, is hiking its prices yet again.

Spotify announced on July 24, 2023 that it would be increasing the prices of its Premium plans in the United States and 50 other markets. The price increase will go into effect on August 1, 2023. If you’re already a Premium subscriber, you will pay $15.99/month until your billing date in September when your subscription will go up to the new price.

The service announced the changes on the 24th in a blog post and notified customers that same day about the increase via email. They stated the uptike in cost was so they “can continue to invest in and innovate on our product offerings and features, and bring you the best experience.

The following are the new prices for Spotify Premium plans in the United States:

Premium Individual: $10.99 per month
Premium Duo: $14.99 per month
Premium Family: $16.99 per month
Premium Student: $5.99 per month

Spotify said that the price increase was necessary to “continue to deliver value to fans and artists on our platform.” The company also said that it would be investing the additional revenue in “new products and features,” as well as “content and creator payments.”

The price increase has been met with mixed reactions from users. Some users have expressed understanding, while many others have said that they will be canceling their subscriptions.

Twitter (sorry, X) has been inundated with unhappy users calling Spotify and its execs “greedy.” Many asked if the price increase meant the service would be paying artists more. We’re going to guess that’s a no…

If you are a Spotify Premium subscriber and are not happy with the price increase, you could consider one of the following options:

  • Switch to a different music streaming service. There are a number of other popular music streaming services available, such as Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music.
  • Downgrade to a free plan. Spotify offers a free plan that allows you to listen to music with ads.
  • Take advantage of a free trial. Spotify often offers free trials of its Premium plans. You can sign up for a free trial and see if it is worth the price.
