DT900 – Ron Mexico

Despite the many weird and wonderful submissions they get from Joe Public at Data Transmission – think everything from bottles of homemade hooch to used underwear – Data Transmission freely admit that we were most surprised to receive a cassette accompanied by a polaroid photo of alphabetti spaghetti spelling out ‘I AM RON MEXICO’ in the post at the tail end of last year. Intrigued, DT dusted off their Walkman and gave the tape a listen to find that what was on offer, was, well… surprisingly good!!! They then set about finding him online, only to find that there was not a single mention of him on the internet.
Several weeks passed and having written Ron Mexico off as an elaborate prank concocted by the overactive imagination of one of their many friends with far too much time on their hands, Data Transmission didn’t expect to hear from him again. Then the postman delivered a bottle of tequila every day for twelve days. A postcard then followed, with the following message inscribed in Spanish, “Now you’re suitably inebriated, perhaps we can talk on Facebook.”
One brief chat later, Data Transmission had arranged for Ron to join us at the burgeoning snow festival, Rise, wherein we’d meet the mysterious selector in the flesh for the first time.
His rider, predictably, contained a variety of mezcal, alongside “1 semi-inflated inflatable shark, a frozen banana, and a copy of The Karate Kid on VHS.” The time in the French Alps with a masked Ron was fleeting and, having ingested what we’d consider a potentially lethal amount of Mexican spirits, Ron Mexico left as much of an enigma as he’d arrived.
Six years on, Ron Mexico has become the selector of all music for Data Transmission, the tequila to our tacos, the voice whispering vinyl secrets in our ears. Now, to mark a momentous milestone, Ron has taken on the 900th Data Transmission podcast with a special 3-hour-and-30-minute mix. It’s a cosmic, tequila-soaked odyssey spanning genres and dimensions we didn’t even know existed. 
The mix begins with the sound of a bottle of mezcal being uncorked, crescendos with field recordings from the jungles of Oaxaca, and ends with what we’re pretty sure is a live feed from the International Space Station. 
As always, Ron Mexico defies description, explanation, and logic – but honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

DJ Alfredo Fiorito Dies.

Today, the dance music world mourns the loss of DJ Alfredo Fiorito, a true pioneer and the man affectionately known as the “Father of the Balearic Beat.” His influence on dance music is immeasurable, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone he touched through his music and spirit.
Born in Rosario, Argentina, in 1953, Alfredo’s journey to becoming a global icon began when he moved to Ibiza in 1976. Initially working various jobs—from candlemaker to delivery driver—it wasn’t until 1982 that he stepped behind the decks at Be Bop, a bar in Ibiza Town, sparking a career that would shape the sound of an era.
By 1983, Alfredo secured a residency at Amnesia, an underground club that became a legendary destination for music lovers. His sets were groundbreaking, blending an eclectic mix of pop, soul, funk, jazz, and the emerging sounds of house music. This unique style captured the essence of Ibiza—carefree, experimental, and uplifting—and laid the foundation for what would later become the Balearic Beat.
In 1987, British DJs Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway, and Johnny Walker visited Amnesia and were profoundly inspired by Alfredo’s sets. This encounter sparked the introduction of the Balearic sound to the UK, catalyzing the acid house and rave movements that defined the late ’80s and early ’90s. Alfredo’s influence was far-reaching, extending beyond Ibiza to clubs across Europe and Asia, including a memorable residency at Zouk Club in Singapore.
We at Data Transmission were privileged to experience Alfredo’s sets many times at Turnmills and during magical nights in Ibiza. His music wasn’t just a soundtrack; it was a journey, a celebration of life that brought people together on dance floors around the world.
In recent years, Alfredo faced health challenges following a stroke in 2021. The dance music community rallied to support him, a testament to the deep love and respect he earned throughout his life.
As we reflect on Alfredo’s incredible contributions, we celebrate a life filled with passion, creativity, and joy. While today is marked with sadness, we honor the legacy of a man who gave so much to music and culture.
Rest in peace, Alfredo. Your music will continue to inspire and unite us all.
