Tony De Vit, a pioneering figure in the hard house/trance genre, passed away on July 2, 1998, at the age of just 40 – having played a crucial role in shaping the UK club scene during the mid to late 90s.
De Vit gained recognition as a DJ at popular gay clubs Heaven and Trade, where he successfully introduced his Hi-NRG influenced sound to a wider audience. Tracks such as Burning Up, Are You All Ready? and The Dawn – the last of which was released posthumously – remain hard house classics to this day.
Furthermore, De Vit played a pivotal role in the debut of the renowned Global Underground series. The label upstart Boxed approached him as the first choice for Global Underground GU001 Live in Tel Aviv, a groundbreaking release in 1996. A year later, he followed up with the fifth instalment of the series, Global Underground GU005: Tokyo.
Commenting on his passing back in 1998, NME said that De Vit “was responsible for a real revolution in clubland. It was his phenomenal mixing ability and ability to ‘read’ a dancefloor that took the ferociously hard and fast ‘nu energy’ techno sound out of the London gay scene and onto the straight dancefloors of Britain and the world.”
