Walter Gibbons died 30 years ago today, on September 23 1994. He was the first DJ’s DJ, a genius, and still somehow criminally underrated. In tribute we’re resurfacing a profile and first-hand impression of hearing him live in the 1970s, plus an essential playlist of Walter Gibbons remixes.

That night in 1977 when I heard Walter Gibbons at The Second Story in Philly allowed me a peek into the foundation of a DJ and remixer that would produce epic, unique and historic music.
